Big Three Calculator
Your 'big three' are your Sun, Moon and Rising signs — the three placements most often used to summarise a chart. In astrology they describe your identity, your emotional nature, and how you meet the world. Enter your birth details to find all three at once.
Find your big three
Sun, Moon and Rising are calculated together from your birth date, time and place.
What the 'big three' are
In popular astrology, the big three refers to your Sun, Moon and Rising (Ascendant) signs. They are grouped together because each covers a different, fundamental layer of the chart, and reading them as a trio gives a quick but meaningful sketch of the whole.
- Sun — your core identity, will and sense of purpose
- Moon — your emotional nature, instincts and what makes you feel secure
- Rising — your outward style and instinctive approach to new situations
How Sun, Moon and Rising differ
The Sun is who you are becoming; the Moon is how you feel and self-soothe; the Rising is how you come across before people know you. Two people can share a Sun sign yet feel completely different because their Moon and Rising differ.
This is why a single Sun-sign horoscope can feel generic. The big three already add far more nuance, and the full chart adds houses and aspects on top of that.
Why you need a birth time for the Rising sign
Your Sun and Moon signs can usually be found from your date and place, but the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours and depends on an accurate birth time. Without a time, the calculator can still return your Sun and Moon, but not a reliable Rising sign.
How this calculator works
The tool sends your birth details to the same astronomy engine as the full GetBirthChart calculator — there is no separate shortcut calculation. It returns your complete chart, from which your Sun, Moon and Rising are read directly.
If you want more than the summary, the same result contains every planet, house and aspect, so your big three sit in full context.
Common questions
- Is the big three the same as a full birth chart?
- No. The big three are a summary of three placements. A full birth chart also includes the other planets, all twelve houses and the aspects between them, which is why we calculate the whole chart and then show your big three within it.
- What if I don't know my birth time?
- You'll still get your Sun and Moon signs. The Rising sign needs an accurate time, so it can't be determined reliably without one.
