Astrological Aspects

An aspect is a measured angular relationship between two calculated planetary longitudes. It describes how two functions connect: they may combine, exchange resources, create structural friction, reinforce one another or stand across a polarity.

The five major aspect references below explain geometry, mechanism, orb and context. The separate natal examples are interaction pages for one chart; Synastry pages describe contacts between two charts. Similar angles do not make those jobs interchangeable.

How aspect evidence works

Angle first

Conjunction is 0°, sextile 60°, square 90°, trine 120° and opposition 180°. The engine measures calculated longitudes; sign names alone do not prove an aspect.

Orb is calculated

Orb is the distance from the exact angle returned by the chart engine. Tighter geometry is closer to exact, but the public reference does not invent one universal allowance for every body or context.

Planets and context matter

The same geometry behaves differently in a natal chart, across two charts in Synastry, or as a timed transit. The planets, signs, houses and the rest of the chart supply the specific mechanism.

Read a calculated aspect in three checks

The aspect name is only the beginning. Use the engine result to separate the geometry from the interpretation.

  1. 1. Confirm the angle

Check the two planetary longitudes and the exact aspect returned by the chart engine. Sign combinations alone do not prove a contact.

  2. 2. Read the orb

Orb is the distance from the exact angle. It is calculated evidence, not a universal strength score detached from the bodies involved.

  3. 3. Add context

The planets, signs, houses and surrounding aspects explain what the connection is doing. A trine is not automatically easy and a square is not automatically bad.

For the same geometry between two people, read Synastry. For a dated moving contact, use transits. Data sources explain the calculation boundary; the editorial review line above links to the full Methodology.

Major aspect references

Read these pages for the geometry and operating mechanism. Follow the natal examples below only when you want a specific within-chart planet-to-planet interaction.

Natal aspect examples

These examples answer a narrower question: how two named planetary functions interact inside one natal chart. They do not redefine the aspect geometry or describe a two-person relationship.
