Chart functions

The Planets in Astrology

The Sun, Moon and planets are the active functions of a birth chart. They describe different jobs: identity and vitality, emotional regulation, perception, attraction, pursuit, growth, structure and long-cycle change.

A planet is not a full personality label. Its sign describes how the function operates, its house describes where it operates, and its aspects describe how it exchanges energy with other functions. The complete chart is the verification layer.

The planetary system

Luminaries

The Sun and Moon are treated as chart lights: conscious direction and vitality meet emotional regulation, safety and instinctive response.

Personal planets

Mercury, Venus and Mars describe perception and communication, values and reciprocity, then activation and pursuit. Their signs and houses make those functions specific.

Social and outer planets

Jupiter and Saturn describe growth and structure, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move more slowly and add generational or long-cycle context to a personal chart.
