How We Test Birth Chart Calculators

A birth-chart comparison is only useful when the inputs and calculation settings are matched. This page defines the fixture, measurements and evidence labels used in the GetBirthChart calculator comparison cluster.

Why settings must be matched

Two calculators can receive the same date and place but still answer different questions if one uses a sidereal zodiac, a different house system, another lunar-node convention or a different coordinate. A difference is not automatically a calculation error. The first step is to record every input and setting that shaped the result.

  • Match the local date and clock time, including AM/PM interpretation.
  • Match Tropical or Sidereal zodiac and, for Sidereal, the ayanamsa.
  • Match the house system, node mode, aspect set and orb policy.
  • Record the resolved coordinates, IANA timezone and UTC conversion.

Synthetic fixture policy

Comparison pages use synthetic test fixtures, never a customer chart or a real person’s private birth data. A fixture is published with an ID, exact inputs, tested date and result URLs where those URLs are safe to share. Session tokens, cookies, browser metadata and private logs are excluded.

The first fixture is GBC-COMP-001, tested August 25, 2026. It is not a claim about any person born on this date.

The GBC-COMP-001 test fixture

The comparison uses January 15, 1990 at 12:00 PM in New York City, New York, United States. The expected timezone is EST / UTC−05:00. Both runs use Tropical zodiac and Placidus houses. Coordinates were resolved independently by each tool and recorded rather than silently treated as identical.

Tropical versus Sidereal

Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs use different reference frames for labeling ecliptic longitude. A Tropical result should be compared with Tropical, and a Sidereal result should name its ayanamsa. In the first comparison, GetBirthChart’s product profile is Tropical and Astro-Seek was set to Tropical, so this setting did not explain the observed differences.

House-system matching

Houses are derived from birth time, location and a house algorithm. Placidus, Whole Sign and Equal can place the same planet in different houses while all three calculations are internally coherent. The first comparison used Placidus in both tools and compared all twelve cusps, not just the Ascendant.

True versus Mean Lunar Node

The Moon’s ascending node can be represented as a True Node, which follows the oscillating osculating position, or a Mean Node, which follows a smoothed mean motion. The two values can differ by about a degree. A calculator must label which convention it uses before a North Node comparison is meaningful. GetBirthChart’s Western Modern profile is code-confirmed as True North Node; Astro-Seek’s captured default was Mean Node with a visible True toggle.

Timezone and historical daylight saving

The local civil time must be converted with the timezone rules that applied on that date. A fixed UTC offset can be wrong for historical daylight-saving transitions, and the error can move angles and house cusps quickly. We record the IANA timezone, the resolved offset and the resulting UTC instant. For the fixture, January in New York resolves to EST / UTC−05:00 with no daylight-saving adjustment.

Coordinate resolution

A city name is not a coordinate. Each provider can resolve the same label to a nearby point, so the comparison records latitude and longitude for both runs. The two New York resolutions differ by roughly 0.002° and remained in central New York City for this fixture. That small difference did not produce a sign or house-placement change in the captured results.

AM/PM and UTC conversion

The test records the human-facing local time and the provider’s UTC interpretation. A 12:00 PM input means noon, not midnight. For the fixture, 12:00 PM EST converts to 17:00 UTC. If a result instead uses midnight or a different offset, the comparison stops at input normalization rather than calling the output a mathematical discrepancy.

Absolute ecliptic longitude normalization

Displayed sign and degree labels are converted to one absolute ecliptic longitude before differences are measured. The formula is sign index × 30° + degree + minute ÷ 60, where Aries is index 0 and Pisces is index 11. This avoids treating a sign boundary as a large difference when two values are close across 0° Aries.

Arcminute differences

For two normalized longitudes a and b, the shortest circular separation is min(|a − b|, 360° − |a − b|). We multiply that separation by 60 to report arcminutes. A displayed 25°17′ versus 25°16′ is therefore a 1′ displayed difference, not a claim that the underlying unrounded values are identical.

How differences are interpreted

These bands are editorial triage rules, not universal accuracy thresholds. They tell us what to check next and keep rounding from becoming a dramatic claim.

Unknown-time testing

An unknown-time run is a separate test, not a weaker exact-time run. We check whether a tool omits or estimates the Ascendant, Midheaven, houses, planet degrees and Moon precision. The published result must say what the tool actually did. In this fixture GetBirthChart omits angles, houses and degrees and displays a prominent limitation; Astro-Seek omits angles and houses but displays noon-based degrees.

UX and transparency criteria

Feature comparisons record observed behavior such as settings exposed, placement degrees shown, aspect-orb format, interactive result controls, unknown-time messaging and advertising in the captured viewport. Mobile behavior, privacy practices, and controls that were not opened are labeled Not verified and are not turned into strong conclusions.

Disclosure and evidence labels

GetBirthChart is one of the evaluated products and is operated by the person who commissioned this comparison. The pages distinguish Observed fact, Provider-documented claim, Editorial judgement, Inference and Not verified. The comparison does not award an overall winner or claim that either tool is more accurate from one fixture.

Calculation and interpretation are separate

Astronomical position calculation produces structured chart data. Interpretation is a separate layer that gives symbolic, reflective meaning to those facts. The AI interpretation layer does not calculate planetary positions, and a comparison of calculation output does not validate astrology as a scientific prediction system.

Corrections and retesting

If a transcription, route, engine output or editorial statement is challenged, we return to the raw result tables and source code, reproduce the case, label the outcome, and update the affected data record and page. A product bug gets a focused regression test. A source transcription error is corrected in the evidence record without changing production behavior. Material changes follow the Corrections Policy.

Last tested

The GBC-COMP-001 comparison was tested on August 25, 2026. It reflects the captured desktop session and the supplied result tables. Future comparison pages should carry their own tested date rather than inheriting this one.
