Why Birth Chart Calculators Give Different Results: A Same-Data Test
Birth chart calculators usually differ because their settings or input normalization differ. In a matched Tropical + Placidus test, GetBirthChart and Astro-Seek agreed within 0–1 arcminute on every tested planet, angle and house cusp.

GetBirthChart is one of the two products evaluated. This is a synthetic fixture, not a real person's data. The calculations were compared as displayed, and a 0–1′ difference is described as consistent with display rounding, not proof that unrounded values are identical.
The exact test fixture
Fixture GBC-COMP-001: January 15, 1990, 12:00 PM, New York City, New York, United States. Expected timezone: EST / UTC−05:00. Both calculators used Tropical zodiac and Placidus houses. The coordinates were recorded separately because place resolution is part of the input.

Short results summary
The ten displayed planets agreed within 0–1 arcminute. The Ascendant agreed at Taurus 12°06′. The Midheaven was Capricorn 24°00′ in GetBirthChart and Capricorn 23°59′ in Astro-Seek. All twelve Placidus house cusps agreed within 0–1′, with no observed sign or house-placement difference. Mercury, Venus and Jupiter retrograde flags agreed. Shared major aspect orbs agreed after converting decimal degrees to degrees and minutes.

All twelve Placidus house cusps
A house comparison is stronger when it checks all twelve cusps. Here the largest displayed cusp difference was 1′, at houses 3, 4, 9 and 10. The Ascendant and Descendant remained Taurus 12°06′ and Scorpio 12°06′ in both displays.

The North Node worked example
The North Node is the clearest example of why a different number does not automatically mean a broken calculator. Astro-Seek’s default Mean Node was Aquarius 17°40′. When its True toggle was enabled, the value moved to Aquarius 16°35′. The supplied Cafe Astrology reference was Aquarius 16°36′, while the Astro-Charts reference was Aquarius 17°41′ with its node mode not visibly labeled. The reference values line up with different conventions.
The GetBirthChart engine configuration resolves the product’s selected mode: the Western Modern profile sets node_type to true, and the engine selects true_node for the product point/aspect path. The result surface now labels this as True North Node. That is a configuration fact, not a new calculation added for this article.

Why Rising signs and houses differ
The Ascendant moves quickly and depends on the exact instant and geographic location. Houses then depend on the Ascendant, the sky’s local rotation, latitude and the selected house system. A different timezone offset, an AM/PM mistake, a nearby coordinate, a historical daylight-saving rule or a sign-frame mismatch can change the result. First match the inputs; only then investigate the mathematics.
In this test, New York was resolved to nearby coordinates by each provider, and January 15 used EST. With Tropical and Placidus matched, the Ascendant and all house cusps stayed within 1′.
Aspect orbs can use different units
GetBirthChart displays aspect orbs in decimal degrees, while Astro-Seek displays degrees and minutes. For example, 1.4° is approximately 1°24′, and the captured 1°22′ value is approximately 1.37°. Compare the underlying angular separation after unit conversion rather than comparing the punctuation of the display.

Unknown birth time is a policy difference
When the birth time is unknown, a calculator has to decide what not to show. GetBirthChart omits the Rising sign, ASC/MC and houses, withholds exact planet degrees, and displays a prominent limitation notice. Astro-Seek omits houses and angles but continues to display planet degrees from a noon-based result. This is a difference in handling and communication, not a universal accuracy ranking.

A practical comparison checklist
Before deciding that two calculators disagree, compare these fields in order:
- Date, local clock time and AM/PM interpretation.
- Birthplace, resolved coordinates and IANA timezone.
- Historical daylight-saving offset and UTC conversion.
- Tropical or Sidereal zodiac, including ayanamsa when relevant.
- House system and whether a reliable birth time is available.
- True or Mean Lunar Node mode.
- Aspect set, orb rules and decimal-versus-degree-minute formatting.
Limitations of this test
This was one synthetic fixture and a captured desktop session. It does not establish a universal accuracy ranking, test mobile layout, or provide ground-truth proof that every underlying unrounded value is identical. The GetBirthChart Actions tab was not opened far enough to verify each download, print and share control individually. Current privacy policies were not directly compared in this run. Those claims remain Not verified.
The test also covers two products. It is not evidence for a future ranked ‘best calculators’ list, which needs a broader fixture queue and a declared scoring method.

Does a different result mean one calculator is wrong?
Not necessarily. Match timezone, coordinates, zodiac, house system, node mode and aspect settings before investigating a calculation error.
Why is my Rising sign different on different sites?
The Ascendant depends on the exact local instant, timezone conversion, coordinates and calculation settings. A small input or configuration difference can move it.
Why is my North Node different?
Check whether each calculator uses the True North Node or Mean North Node. Those conventions can differ by about a degree.
